Gorgeous Product Photos

It’s not all about painting at Roelofs & Rubens!  Capturing great product shots for our website and shop needs just as much attention so we can show-off our amazing ranges in all their detail.  Good studio shots can be hard to capture, but never fear, we have the talented Piet who does all the photography. We use nice and simple, plain background shots that really focus on the product, plus lifestyle shots that help us to visualise the product in a surrounding.  Top Tips: good lighting, tripod to keep things steady, nice set-up, watch for shadows and don’t be afraid!

Our NEW London Collection – Coming Soon

Stone cathedrals and churches, houses and palaces, river crossings and the observation wheel of steel. Taking a walk through London is like immersing yourself in a history of architecture.

Our NEW London Collection is a work in progress and celebrates some of the amazing architectural landmarks in the capital that are worth admiring.

Each one of our beautiful London hanging decorations is hand cut and hand decorated. But before we could even get to the clay cutting stage, Piet worked on a series of line drawings (which are a piece of art in themselves and wouldn’t look out of place hanging on a gallery wall!). These drawings are used to create a template for clay cutting and to also capture the detail that you see on the finished decorations. Piet has turned these iconic structures into beautiful decorations for your home – with a few fun ‘flag wearing’ cats and dogs!

We know there are loads more buildings and structures and vehicles so watch this space as we grow and develop our beautiful collection to really capture the essence of the real London.

This collection is a work in progress and will be available very soon to purchase. In the meantime please let us know what you think and what iconic building represents London for you.

Look what we do in our spare time!

Even when we are not officially working we still love to paint and create something new. Piet has made these beautiful fish for her own collection. Each one is hand cut and hand painted in the traditional blue and white colour theme that Roelofs & Rubens are famous for. The fish look amazing and make a stunning hanging display in Piet & Monty’s home.

Buildings of Interest

We have been really busy creating distinctive, eye-catching hanging decorations of beautiful buildings. Each building is handmade and we pride ourselves on being able to reproduce the original building design by adding the detail in our traditional blue.

British architecture is well worth celebrating and consists of an eclectic combination of styles, ranging from those that predate the creation of UK, such as Roman, to 21st century contemporary.

One of our customers, West Berkshire Museum, is housed in two of Newbury’s best loved historic buildings – the 17th century Cloth Hall and the old Granary/Corn Stores. Piet has really captured the distinctive features of the building.

We don’t just work with corporate customers, we can create buildings of interest for everyone – the church you got married in maybe.

It is great to be able to create a permanent memory of beautiful buildings.

Amazing Delft Tile Workshops

On Friday 5th May 2017 we had a lovely group of people join us at West Berkshire Museum in Newbury for our tile painting workshop.  Piet (Roelofs & Rubens founder, owner & designer) first gave a little talk about the history of Delftware, also known as Delft Blue, which is the charming variety of blue and white ceramic pottery originating from Delft in the Netherlands, and showed examples of the classic tile designs dating from the 16th century.

Our enthusiastic painters started with blank, unglazed ceramic tiles, and learnt all the techniques needed to paint a set of 4 tiles with their own designs. Then the painted masterpieces were taken away to be glazed and fired. Everyone had a great time and the finished tiles are amazing.

We have 2 more workshops coming up at the West Berkshire Museum on Friday 23rd June and 7th July. If you would like to book a place please call the Museum on 01635 519562 or email museum@westberks.gov.uk

Open Studios 2017 – The 29th Year

West Berkshire & North Hampshire Open Studios

For 3 weeks in May, Newbury Spring Festival and Open Studios provide a daily opportunity to appreciate art and music, and perhaps choose yourself a fine picture, sculpture or ceramic to delight you for many days ahead. Our very own creative genius, Piet, is a huge supporter of Open Studios and often has her own work on display. This year she took part in the ‘Cover to Cover’ sketch book scheme of Open Studios which is on show at the library of the West Berkshire Museum . It’s all about Morris Dancers!

If you are in Oxford during the Folk Festival Weekend, you’ll never be far from a Morris Group! Wearing lavishly decorated costumes, showcasing many different morris traditions, the Morris Dancing Group’s perform in the streets and at fantastic locations across the city centre.

Roelofs & Rubens supported the event in their own unique and creative way by offering bespoke Morris dancer hanging decorations, hand painted in the Morris group’s own colours and beautifully finished with bells and ribbons.
